Construction of a numerical model of seepage water migration from municipal solid waste landfills through ground protective structures

pic18The process of filtrate up-flowing from the bottom of the reservoir to the upper layers of adjacent rocks due to the migration of municipal solid waste filtrate during long-term operation of MSW landfills was studied numerically. Leachate formed in a landfill can penetrate groundwater and later on make its way into the surface water. The rate of leachate formation depends on the atmospheric precipitations. The filtering capacity of a dam protecting the natural environment from solid municipal waste leachate was calculated. It is shown that the leachate will reach the reservoir behind the dam in 4-5 years in the limiting case of maximum precipitation.
