Identification of Arctic amplification mechanisms based on the laboratory model of global atmospheric circulation

pic10The research team of ICMM UB RAS developed a laboratory model of atmospheric general circulation, in which the flow structures are the analogs of large-scale meridional cells (Hadley, Ferrel, and polar) and mid-latitude baroclinic waves. One of the critical problems in the polar region is Arctic amplification (rapid temperature increase). According to the predictions of the proposed model the Arctic warming changes the shape of the laboratory analog of the polar cell, which leads to a significant redistribution of heat flows. As a result, the polar region and the lower part of the layer in the mid-latitude region become warmer, while the regions in the lower latitudes become relatively colder. These results can be considered as one possible scenario of the evolution of modern Earth’s atmosphere.
