About the Institute

ИМСС

The Institute of Continuous Media Mechanics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded as the branch of the Perm Federal Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in accordance with the resolution of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences dated February 14, 1980, No. 249 by reconstructing the Department of Polymer Physics of the Ural Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which was established as an independent scientific institution on July 1, 1971 by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. The first Director of the Institute was an outstanding scientist, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Professor Pozdeev Alexander Alexandrovich.  In 2017, the Institute was affiliated to the Perm Federal Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

At present, the IMSS of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is headed by Doctor of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics Mizev Alexey Ivanovich.

Basic scientific directions:

  • Mathematical and physical modeling of the processes of deformation, failure and abnormal behavior of solids, taking into account temperature-time effects, chemical and phase transformations in materials, nucleation and growth of defects.
  • Methods of numerical experiment in mechanics of deformable solids and fluid mechanics.
  • Problems of hydrodynamic stability and turbulence: forced flows, convection; physicochemical hydrodynamics of polymers, suspensions and magnetic fluids.

In the 1970s, the Institute included four laboratories: physical properties of polymers, physical and mathematical modeling, physical hydrodynamics, structures and technological processes. Research conducted in these laboratories drew up the guideline for further development of the Institute.

Nowadays, the Institute brings together 14 laboratories. It occupies the leading position in the field of theoretical and experimental modeling of solid deformation, fluid mechanics, physicochemical hydrodynamics of suspensions and magnetic fluids. New areas of research, which are currently under development, deal with applications of mechanics to mining processes, biophysics, photonics, rational subsoil use and efficient energy, modern materials and engineering, smart materials.

The Institute today is a well-known research institution with more than 190 research scientists working in fourteen laboratories. Half of the scientific staff is young scientists under the age of 39. The Institute actively cooperates with universities of the Perm region, Russia and other countries within the framework of scientific and educational programs. The Institute has a dissertation council for defending candidate and doctoral dissertations in the specific fields of study, such as “Mechanics of Deformable Solids” and “Mechanics of Liquids, Gases and Plasmas”, publishes the scientific journal “Computational Mechanics of Continuum Media”, and offers postgraduate studies.

Scientific research is carried out in collaboration with domestic and foreign research centers. The Institute is the organizer of several regular conferences and symposia. The results of fundamental research form the basis for a series of applied projects implemented on request of large industrial enterprises and state corporations, such as: State Atomic Energy Corporation ‘Rosatom’, Rostec State Corporation, Roscosmos State Corporation, Aviadvigatel JSC, Afrikantov OKBM JSC, TsAGI FAU, Uralkal PJSC, FSUE TsNIIMash, PNPPC JSC.
