Development of a method for calculating electrodynamic processes in a spiral MHD pump of a transformer type

pic12A method for calculating the parameters of a spiral MHD pump developed at the ICMM UB RAS [Patent of the Russian Federation No. 2810528, state registration in the register of the Russian Federation on 27.12.23] offers new possibilities for designing MHD pumps that can generate high pressures in low-conductivity alloys such as lead.

The construction of nuclear power plants that use liquid lead as a coolant enhances the relevance of research and design of devices with increased pumping capacity. A method for calculating the operating parameters of a transformer-type spiral MHD pump was developed.

Numerical modeling of the electrodynamic processes in such pumps was carried out. An analytical estimating relation, allowing the performance of different pump designs to be compared without recourse to computational software, was derived.

Calculations made by use of the estimating formula and numerical model were compared with experimental results. It was shown that the pump can generate high pressures of the order of several megapascals, even in such metals as liquid lead showing low electrical conductivity.
