The Department of Polymer Physics of the Ural Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences was founded by the Decree of the State Committee of the Council of Ministers of the USSR for Science and Technology (protocol No. 22 of April 16, 1971). It was located in the main building of the Perm Polytechnic Institute

By decision of the USSR State Committee for Science and Technology (protocol of January 29 1980), the Department of Polymer Physics of the Ural Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences was reorganized into the Institute of Continuous Media Mechanics of the Ural Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences
